Chapter Eight

“Are we all ready?” Patrick asked.

The small group gathered in the empty hotel lobby. Fletcher could feel the nervous energy buzzing between them. He could see it in the way that Will tapped his foot restlessly against the carpet, and the way that Charlie shifted his baseball bat between his hands. Alby had taken up watch on the barricade with Sadie, armed with a pair of binoculars and a walkie talkie. It wasn’t lost on Fletcher that despite not wanting to get his hands dirty, Alby still wanted to be involved in the operation.

“As ready as we’ll ever be,” Charlie said. He and Zoe were standing by the entrance to the stairwell, weapons in hand.

They’d decided that the best course of action to clear out the hotel would be to split up. The last thing any of them wanted was for their entire entourage to be confined in the hotel’s narrow hallways. Their guess was that most of the hotel’s undead residents would likely still be locked in their rooms. With Charlie as their strongest fighter, he and Zoe had been tasked with clearing the hallways and stairwells as quickly as possible. Then, it would be a staggered start for the others to methodically work through the floors to take out the trapped biters.

“We’re on the radio if you need us,” Fletcher reminded them. He patted the walkie talkie in his belt proudly.

“Roger,” Charlie replied, with a salute.

“No, that’s Fletcher,” Will said.

“And that’s a terrible joke,” Charlie retorted, his lips twitching as he held back a smile. He turned to Zoe, who smiled nervously. “Shall we get this over with?”

Zoe nodded. She kissed Patrick on the cheek and his eyes lingered on hers. “Be careful, whatever you do.”

“I will,” she promised. “And you too. I’d like my boyfriend in one piece, please.”

Patrick smiled. “I’ll try.”

Will make a fake vomiting noise that caused Patrick to blush. He pulled away from Zoe, the tips of his ears burning red. She moved toward the door, which Charlie was holding open for her.

“Go get ‘em!” Will encouraged.

After they left, Fletcher ducked behind the concierge’s desk. A quick rummage produced two sets of master keys that would unlock all of the rooms in the hotel. Fletcher pocketed one set and threw the other to Will.

“I never thought I’d have to worry about losing my keys again,” Will said.

The comment was met with silence. This was the part that Fletcher hated the most. Knowing that he was staring into the face of the unknown.

He could see the tension in Patrick’s jaw with each minute that passed. After their close shave in the car park, Fletcher knew that Patrick was hesitant to let Zoe out of his sight again. He couldn’t blame him. If he had someone so important left to hold on to, he wouldn’t be apart from them for even a minute.

“That’s fifteen minutes,” Patrick said at last, consulting his watch. “That should have given them enough of a head start...us next Fletch.”

Fletcher bid farewell to Will and Hakim, who loitered behind in the lobby waiting to tackle the second floor.
